Leg locks are a signature part of the 10th Planet system, and they have a reputation. Done well, they're a precise, control-first game. Done badly, they're dangerous. Our Leg Locks 101 class is built to teach the safe, controlled version first — before anyone is allowed to chase the finish.
Control before submission
The biggest misconception about leg locks is that they're all about the finish. In reality, the entire game is control. Ashi garami — the basic straight ankle lock position — is a control position first and a submission second. If you can hold your partner there calmly, the submission is a matter of time and pressure, not force.
What we cover in Leg Locks 101
- Entries — how to get to the leg safely from standing and from guard.
- Ashi garami — the foundational control position.
- Straight ankle lock mechanics — finishing without yanking.
- Defenses and escapes — what to do when you're the one caught.
- Safety and tapping — recognizing pressure before it becomes injury.
Who it's for
Leg Locks 101 is open to all levels, but we recommend a few beginner classes first so you're comfortable on the mat. It's part of our $45 trial week if you train elsewhere and want to sample our specialized curriculum.
Why we teach it this way
Gyms that teach leg locks as a sprint to the submission produce injuries. We teach them as a control game because that's what actually works in rolling and competition, and because it keeps training partners on the mat. The Aoki Lock seminar on October 17 builds directly on this foundation — if you're curious about the advanced game, start here.
