What to Expect in Your First No-Gi Class

Oct 2, 2026 4 min readBy 10th Planet Torrance

Walking into a jiu-jitsu gym for the first time is intimidating for almost everyone. That's normal. This is a quick walkthrough of what a first no-gi class actually looks like at 10th Planet Torrance so you know exactly what you're walking into.

Before you arrive

Wear athletic shorts or spats with no metal zippers, pockets, or sharp buttons, and a rashguard or fitted t-shirt. Bring a water bottle and slides or flip-flops for off the mat. You don't need a gi, and you don't need to be in shape — that's what the class is for.

Register first

Scan the QR code at the door or book online to register and sign your waiver before your first class. It takes two minutes and saves you from doing it at the front desk.

How class flows

  • Warm-up — light movement to get the body warm and the joints loose.
  • Technique — the coach shows a position or submission and you drill it with a partner.
  • Positional sparring — controlled rounds from a specific position, not free rolling.
  • Cooldown and notes — a chance to ask questions before you head out.

Free rolling is not required in your first class. Most beginners start with positional sparring and work up to live rounds over a few weeks. Tap early, communicate with your partner, and you'll be fine.

"I was nervous to try jiu-jitsu in my 30s. The free trial here changed that. The coaches are patient and there are zero egos on the mat."

— Marcus V., member

After class

Stick around for a few minutes after. Introduce yourself to the coach, ask about the next class, and grab a water. The community is the best part of this gym — the sooner you're a familiar face, the sooner it feels like home.
