Open mat is the best part of the week for a lot of our members — unstructured rolling, no set curriculum, just time on the mat. It's also where good and bad training partners reveal themselves. Here's how to be the kind of person everyone wants to roll with.
Tap early
The single most important rule. A tap is not a loss; it's communication. Tap the moment a submission is locked and you can't escape — long before it hurts. Tapping late is how injuries happen, and it doesn't make you tougher. It just makes you a worse partner.
Match the intensity
- Ask your partner what they're working on before you start.
- If they want a light roll, keep it light — even if you could dominate.
- If they want to compete, bring the pace.
- Never surprise someone with a higher intensity than they agreed to.
Open mat is free
Our open mat sessions (Tuesday 9:30 PM, Wednesday 8:45 PM, Saturday 12:30 PM) are free and open to all schools. Visitors are welcome — just sign the waiver at the door.
Communicate
If something feels off — a crank instead of a choke, a position that's tweaking a joint — say something. Good partners adjust. The mat is a conversation, not a competition to see who can stay quiet the longest.
